Young People Haven’t Given Up on Family—They’re Waiting for the Right Conditions

A new UNFPA report, coordinated with the involvement of Arnstein Aassve, Full Professor at Department of Social and Political Sciences, reframes the debate on falling birth rates: young people are not abandoning family life, but struggling to access the conditions that make it possible. Across 73 countries, most still value partnership, marriage, and parenthood, yet economic insecurity, unstable work, housing costs, and limited support delay these choices. The policy focus should shift from encouraging births to enabling free choices through better jobs, affordable housing, childcare, and work-life balance.
