The Patchwork Republic

The US midterms reveal not only political polarization, but a deeper fragmentation of governance. Elections, abortion, climate policy, immigration, and pandemic responses are increasingly managed differently across states, often under competing views of federal authority. This “patchwork republic” challenges legality, accountability, transparency, and democratic responsiveness. The result is a divided state whose internal conflicts also weaken the credibility of US commitments abroad.
