Citizens Care About Good Governance More Than We Thought
A study by Anthony M. Bertelli, Full Professor at Bocconi’s Department of Social and Political Sciences, with Silvia Cannas and Marika Danielle Csapo, shows that citizens share stable beliefs about how government should operate. Based on surveys in Italy and the UK, it finds that accountability, impartiality, efficiency, legality, and integrity form a coherent governance framework, largely independent of ideology. Transparency plays a distinct bridging role with democratic values.
