Children of Same-Sex Couples: As Adults, They Choose Careers Less Tied to Gender Stereotypes

A new study by Silvia Palmaccio of Bocconi’s Dondena Centre and INSPIRE, with Deni Mazrekaj and Kristof De Witte, uses Dutch administrative data to examine young adults raised by same-sex parents. The findings show no disadvantage in income, employment, or full-time work. The main difference concerns career choices: these young adults are more likely to enter fields less aligned with traditional gender norms, suggesting that family models may broaden professional aspirations.
