SPS Seminar series: Adam Przeworski, New York University - "Democracy: What we know and what we do not?"

Seminars - Department Seminar Series
5:00pm - 6:15pm

Based on historical patterns, democratic collapse is highly predictable and unlikely in wealthy, stable democracies like the United States, with a  probability near zero. The current situation in the U.S. violates the theory that stakes in elections should be low in countries with high incomes and long democratic traditions.  Hence, neither history nor theory illuminate the situation we are experiencing. Moreover, we have no framework to predict the final outcome of particular backsliding steps.
